Review of the Boost Lift Project for vulnerable young people, aged 18 to 25

In this project, we supported young people experiencing mental health challenges to find positive outcomes through exercise and activity.

Summary

Our Mental Health Partnership team works with Islington’s Mental Health Core team to connect NHS and community services. We approached Lift, a youth hub in Islington, to explore creative ways to support young people. We designed a programme to improve motivation through participation in physical activity. Each young person received support from a personal trainer and a wellbeing coach. A successful bid was submitted to Sport England and funding was raised for a year.

Of the 11 young people who participated and completed monitoring questionnaires at the start and end of the project:

  • Nine are now motivated to attend regular activity
  • Six participants who were under the care of Islington's Mental Health Core team have been discharged
  • All feel physically fitter
  • Participants are more aware of fun and opportunities (employment, skills, social) and more confident to engage with them
  • All the participants have had support around nutrition, various exercise options, wellbeing links, volunteering, and training.
